Is This Real Life?

There are no words... the Cubs are World Series Champions and I cannot believe that I am typing this sentence right now! There's nothing in the world that could wipe the smile off of my face.

That Game 7 (and the Series, in general) was an absolute, no doubt about it, all-time classic and perfectly encapsulated this World Series Championship season for the Cubs.  Just like during the regular season and the big comebacks vs. the Giants and Dodgers in the playoffs, the Cubs were knocked to the mat, but hopped right back up and refused to give up.  This is the most resilient baseball team that I've ever had the pleasure of watching.  I'm just glad my poor heart survived that emotional roller coaster of a baseball game.

My grandfather, the man who raised me to love and respect our nation's glorious pastime, who used to truantly sit in the stands at Wrigley in the 30's, who loved baseball so much that he missed his own wedding reception to watch the Go-Go White Sox in the World Series, who bought me my first baseball cards, who lived and died with some of the worst teams to take the field... my only regret is that he wasn't around to take in this scene.  I sort of feel like I'm not worthy to celebrate, not when Grandpa Al was on this earth for 80 years and saw 0 championships and I'm lucky enough to see one while I'm still in my 20's (and, with this young group, hopefully a few more too).

Anyway, I still can't believe this is real life - I keep waiting to wake up from a dream.  The Chicago Cubs have won the 2016 World Series!

  1. I felt the same way in '04 when the Red Sox finally got it done. Even though I'm not a Cubs fan, it's cool to say I've now seen both of the longest MLB championship droughts broken in my lifetime as a fan.
