Who Disturbs My Slumber?

Oh man - how long has it been... what year is it?!

Well, it's still 2018; but, not for much longer.  Anyway, it's been about a month and a half since my last post here on Wrigley Roster Jenga - that's quite a long and fairly unintentional radio silence.  I could run down the list of reasons why and how this hiatus came to be... however, I'm sure you've all heard (and lived) this list of excuses before and don't really care.  Work got crazy, some personal issues, the holiday season sucking up all my time, a general feeling of apathy towards the hobby... you've heard it all before, so why bother wasting the character count?

But, all is well in the Burbs and it's time to shake off the rust, stretch out the blogging muscles, and get this blog back up in running.  Let's see if I can still do this - it's been a minute since I've done this, after all.

A trade package (relatively) recently came across my desk and this generous soul deserves some recognition - it is Trevor P who disturbs my long slumber.  Trevor is the creative force behind the gridiron-centric blog, Bump and Run Football Cards, a long-time favorite on my blog roll.  Being a pigskin guy, it should come as no surprise that the bulk of this package contained football cards.  What was surprising was the fact that so many of the pasteboards included within were needed for me Bears All-Time Roster Collection!

That said, Trev is a Packer backer, so he is most assuredly all too happy to dump as many Bears items on me as possible.

With the Bears being so un-bear-able the last half decade or so, I've kind of pushed my Monster of the Midway collection to the side.  However, under the leadership of new head coach Matt Nagy, things have changed here in the Windy City and, at 8-3, they look like real Superbowl contenders right now.  It's been a while since we Chicagoans could say that!

This pair of 2017 Score cards had been ignored by me during the dark times, but Trevor has brought them back to my attention.  Danny Trevathan has been played a key role in the revival of  Bears' defense and I'm happy to be able to finally add his name to my Bears tome.  Meanwhile, Kendall Wright spent just one season in the Windy City (2017) and is currently out of football.  Nevertheless, a Bear is a Bear, not matter how much of a bust.

Leonard Floyd had been already repped in my binder; however, it was with a card that pictured his days with the University of Georgia squad.  That's well and good, but a true blue and orange Bears card is better.... much like his Leonard's play as of late!

The Throwback-themed Panini Classics product isn't a bad-looking product either.  I always enjoy simply-designed sets that make heavy usage of corresponding team colors.  Speaking of Classics, from this point, Trevor has turned back the clock and shifted the focus to Bears legends of yore:

While I do have several cards of "Da Coach," believe it or not, this 2016 Classics single, from the Legends subset, represents my very first card depicting "Iron Mike's" playing career.  I'd much rather have a card showing the Hall of Famer reeling in a catch than skimming a clipboard or talking into a headset as his representation in my Bears All-Time Roster Collection, so this will be a nice upgrade.

Meanwhile, this is my first card whatsoever of fellow Bears' Canton-resident, Stan Jones.  I know it's hard to believe that card collectors might still have needs from Pro Set, perhaps the most overproduced brand in the history of trading cards, but it's true.  Love the artwork though!

Additionally, Trevor also included this Bears card masquerading as a Dolphins card - I missed this fact, at first glance.  Cox signed with Chicago as a free agent during the 1996 off-season, after a decorated tenure in Miami, a fact that Donruss hurried to document in that year's Football flagship.  Of course, he was about to begin a major downswing and his Bears career wasn't much to document.  Though, he would eventually swap jerseys again and win the Superbowl with the Patriots afterwards.

Now, Trevor also included a large amount of other Bears cards that were quite welcome; however, I decided to limit this post to just the new additions to my main roster collection.  This is my first blog post since early October - I can't afford to pull a muscle trying to do too much to soon, after all!

That said, I would be remiss if I didn't show off the massive, unannounced boost to my Bulls collection that Trevor included with his football gifts:

Trevor may be a gridiron guy, but clearly he dabbles in the paint as well.  That's seven, count 'em, seven instant additions to my Bulls All-Time Roster Collection, a collection that hasn't seen much action in the last year or so.  Like with my Bears binder, with as bad as the Bulls have been since Derrick Rose fell apart, it's been hard to feel any enthusiasm towards this project.  Of course, collecting of any kind is all about the ebbs and flows.

As if all of that wasn't enough already, there was a whole section of Cubs cardboard stuffed in Trev's bubble mailer too.  However, I gotta come clean, it's been so long since I found this package in my mailbox, that I cannot remember what was included from that bunch.  That's what I get for not properly documenting and for letting myself fall headlong into a blogging rut.  My bad.

Thank you, Trevor, for bumping me out of the blogging doldrums.  Sorry it took so long for me to finally take the bait, but I am ever so grateful to you for providing the carrots.  With so much awesome new cardboard to add to my roster collections, it was only a matter of time before the inspiration finally dug it's claws into me.

Here's hoping I can keep this momentum rolling - it's nice to be back, pounding the keys!

Remember the Name

A name can go a long way in bringing recognition.  For instance, Jorge Soler - it's sounds like a strong, powerful, moniker... one that only a beast of a baseball prospect would hold.  It's a name that, even if you weren't a fan of the Cubs (or, now, Royals) you would probably remember, due to it's unique and almost poetic nature.  Similarly, we here on the blogosphere know that the right page name can make a big difference when it comes to page views - it's the first thing that someone sees when they come across your little corner of the internet, after all.  It has to properly convey what your blog is all about in just a handful of words.

A couple of weeks ago, Paul decided that his blog name just wasn't cutting the mustard; the loyal Detroit Tigers realized that he wanted the use the web-space for more than just TTM's.  So, he did a little crowd-sourcing to re-brand the blog formerly known as Paul's TTM Blog.  Of course, I threw my hat in the ring... because why not?

My entrant did not win the contest; but, I must admit, I think that Scribbled Ink is one heckuva catchy name.  Even though my suggestion wasn't nearly as good, Paul was still generous enough to send a "thanks for participating" flat-rate mailer my way.  I shutter to think about what the actual winner got as a reward because this participation package was an absolute winner!

Leading off the goodies was this All-Star game ballot from 2008, the last year in which the mid-summer classic was held in the Motor City.  This was a year that the Cubs were actually good and ended up sending eight representatives to Detroit as part of the National League squad.  Thus, this will make a nice, unique bit of memorabilia for my baseball stashes.  Plus it was just fun to flip through and see all of these old, familiar names...  Geoff Jenkins, Cesar Izturis, Xavier Nady... it's been a long time.

The rest of the package was made up of cards, mostly Cubs, including the beautifully blue Topps Chrome Future Stars insert which began the post.  Accompanying Mr. Soler, Paul included some big names from the past:

Kong, the man who beat father time, Steve Trout looking as 80's as ever, and old fan-favorite Starlin Castro.  Not a bad set of quadruplets there.  These are all well-remembered names in the city of Chicago.

On the flip-side, pretty much none but the most depraved of Cubs fans recalls Dave Swartzbaugh.  Accordingly, this 1997 Fleer single represents Dave's only Big League baseball card and will slide nicely into my CATRC binder, replacing the Classic minor league single which previously occupied his slot.  I've been trying to track this guy down for a long time.

Meanwhile, Mark Grace is anything but a forgotten name - "Amazing Grace" is still a revered figure by Wrigley faithful.  He looks pretty darn good on this reflective Gold Label card from the prodcut's original run.  Speaking of gold...

Paul threw in a bunch of gold parallels too!

However. not all that glitters is gold... I'm a fan of shiny medallions, as well:

That's a pretty sweet looking manu-relic of Anthony Rizzo (from 2016 Update), declaring him a possibility to join the 500 Home Run Club before his career ends.  With 166 long balls through his age 27 season, the chance is there - if he averages a little more than 33 homers for the next ten campaigns, this medallion will not be liar.

The medallion wasn't the only hit of the box either; it wouldn't be a package from the proprietor of Scribbled Ink with a little... scribbled ink:

Zonk!

I think we can all agree that one of the best things Panini ever brought to the table was the Hometown Heroes brand; I mean, what other product offers such niche autographic subjects?  This signature is going to look fantastic in my Cubs All-Time Roster Collection binder!

Even with all of that, there were still plenty more gems to be shown off from Paul's mailing:

Here we have a pair of key rookies, a pair of former Chicago sports greats.  I realize that Jake Arrieta isn't officially off of the table for the Cubs, but I'm fairly certain that he's going to want more money and years than Theo and crew are going to be able to offer.  *sigh*

On the bright side, that Joakim Noah rook kicked off a fairly sizable Bulls portion of the package:

There were a few new names added to my Bulls All-Time Roster Collection, a binder that's almost exclusively filled by trading partners.  For that, I am eternally grateful!

Along with those additions, "His Airness" made is presence felt:

And his presence was impossible to ignore.  As a Chicagoan who grew up during the 1990's, MJ is absolutely a personal favorite.  Also as a Windy City resident who grew up during that dynastic period, any Jordan card feels more like a gold doubloon than a pasteboard, especially that Star Attractions, die-cut insert from Upper Deck.

That about did it for the hardwood portion of the package; but, at this point, can you believe that there was STILL more to be had!

This package ended up covering three sports with this Jeff Gordon All-Star "SAMPLE" from the 2003 edition of Press Pass.  If you're only going to throw in one NASCAR card, you might as well make it a unique one!

As a big finale, Paul also threw in a nice stash of unopened packs that I'll likely save for a rainy day:

Topps Attax cello packs - these must have been some sort of stadium giveaway... perhaps at Comerica Park?  Also, the Mantle and the Ruth appear to be some sort of special addendum to the set; anybody know what the story is behind them?

There was also a cello pack of Fleer's Authentix "Hot Tickets" from 2005, with Sammy Sosa on the front, to boot.  Again, these die-cut oddities appear to be some sort of SGA - can anyone confirm or deny my suspicions?

Lastly, we have some "Brain Straining Doodlewonkers," which is something that is completely lost on me but looks incredibly amusing.  The artwork on the front reminds me of something that one might see on a re-run of Monty Python's Flying Circus.  I'll save this pack for when I'm having a bad day at work or when I need some cheering up.

With that, we've finally come to the end of Paul's "participation mailer."  Again, I shudder to think about what the actual winner of his "name the blog" contest came away with!

The only way to top what we saw here, at least in my opinion.

Thank you, Paul, for putting together such a generous mailing... one that kept me entertained and busy sorting and filing for hours.  You're a good egg, sir!  I would also expect a proper thank you gift, if I were you.

Before I go, please allow me to remind you fellow baseball card bloggers and enthusiasts to update your blogroll, favorites, feed, or what have you to include the new name and URL for Paul's blog, Scribbled Ink - https://scribbledinc.blogspot.com.

There's a lot more to like about that place besides the spiffy new name!

September Roster Expansion

When it comes to baseball, the month of September may be the stretch drive in the race for the playoffs, but it's also significant in it's special roster rules.  As you probably know, MLB clubs are allowed to expand their active roster to include as much of their 40-man as they would like to include, as a way of reinforcing a tired club, an opportunity to look at prospects, or acquiring complimentary pieces, et al.  As such, the benches and bullpens quickly become bloated during the first month of fall, as teams  would be foolish not to take advantage of this quirk.

However, the rosters of Major League Baseball aren't the only rosters being reinforced this September; st least. not on Chris Sutherland's (from The Collector) watch!

"The Pedestrian Writer" contacted me about a week ago to let me know that he could help me out with my various roster collections and, just days later, a thick, bubble mailer showed up in my mail.  Seriously, the thing barely fit in my apartment complex's mailbox - the mass may have done some damage to the mail-carrier's shoulder.  No matter what, it definitely did some damage on my want-lists, though... and in various sports, too!

Since it's football season, let's start with the gridiron:

The Bears might be unbearable (see what I did there?) to watch again this season, but these former Bears were quite the happy sight for me; they may not be in the proper blue and orange uniform, but all needed representation in my Bears All-Time Roster Collection.  Jonathan Quinn and Danny Wuerffel illustrate just how historically "wonderful" the "Monsters of the Midway" have been at the quarterback position and Marion Barber is most remembered in Bears history for two critical miscues in a game against Denver in 2011 that essentially cost the team a playoff berth.  On the other hand, Blake Brockermeyer had a decent, unheralded, three-year stint as an offensive tackle for the team...

...so, it's not all bad!

Although, this pun is gloriously bad. The worse the pun, the better it is!

Vinny Sutherland played in exactly one game for the Bears and it came during the 2002 season.  Against the Lions, he returned 3 kickoffs for an average of 16.3 yards a return - he was released a few days later.  However, at least he stuck around the Bears long enough for Chris to be able to send me his card and make that joke!

Lastly, while he wasn't totally new to my binder, a jersey upgrade of Glyn Milburn was also included in the stash.  As nice as those old school Broncos uniforms are, I prefer my orange and blue every time.

That about did it for the Bears roster portion of Chris' exceptionally generous trade package; but, we're far from through with this yellow, padded mailer.  It's time to turn the thermostat way down and take a shift over on the ice rink.  Hockey season is just around the corner and Mr. Sutherland decided to commemorate the occasion by assaulting my Blackhawks want-list, as well.

I'm not being hyperbolic when I use the term "assault" either:

For those keeping score at home, that's nine new additions to my Blackhawks All-Time Roster Collection binder, including one of the few players from the current dynastic period which have eluded my grasp (Jeremy Morin), some beautiful, vintage O-Pee-Chee (Wayne Van Dorp), and a sweet, gold-bordered parallel (James Wisniewski).  See - this assault is coming on stronger than a Daniel Carcillo check into the boards!

...and yet, it's not quite done:

Another pair of jersey upgrades close out the hockey portion of the trade package.

Gerald Diduck might technically be listed as a Hartford Whaler on the 95-96 Leaf single that Chris forwarded my way, but, with all that's 90's holofoil and tiny text, the photograph dominates that pasteboard.  And what uniform is Gerald wearing in the photo?  Thus, it's a Blackhawks card, to me.  Meanwhile, I can't help but get a kick out of the fact that Phil Russell is depicted in almost the exact same position at the exact same angle, in photographs that were taken about a decade apart.  Plus, that 02-03 Fleer Throwbacks single is gloriously simple and slick.

That pretty much covers the hockey portion of the mailer.  As you can see, Chris' trade offering is already hard to top and speaking of hard... there was still a hardwood section yet to be seen.

For good measure, Chris tossed in some basketball cards, of which Charles Oakley was needed for my Bulls All-Time Roster Collection.  He may be a New York Knickerbocker here, but 90-91 Skybox is such a fun and iconic set that I'm not at all bothered by that fact.

Now if all that you've seen in the post above wasn't enough, Chris further continued his assault on my trading card stocks by graciously including a hefty stack of Cubs cards which had gone unclaimed in his 50/50 giveaway a few weeks ago.  Is this guy not a gem or what?

In that stack, there were...

...90's gems...

...recent needs...

... a significant pre-rookie...

...a couple more pre-rooks, featuring Jonathan's brother and a potential future addition to my Cubs All-Time Roster Collection...

...and minis!  Normally, I honestly don't care much for mini-cards, as they play too many games with my near-obsessive compulsive storage and organization of my card collection.  However, as a counterbalance, I absolutely adore oddballs and this shiny Panini sticker is an eye-catching one.  Furthermore, the Starlin Castro on the left is the first time I've seen one of these 2011 Topps Kimball Champion minis in real life and they are gorgeous.  If a tobacco card and a piece of fine art could have a baby, it would look like these Kimballs.

With that, we've finally reached the end of Chris' seemingly bottomless bubble mailer of goodies.  All told, his exquisite trade package netted me 5 new Bears (plus a jersey upgrade), 9 new Blackhawks (plus two jersey upgrades), and 1 new Bull for my various roster collections, not to mention a bunch of fun, new Cubs cards.  How's that for September roster expansion?!

Thank you Chris - this package was easily the highlight of my week and I'll make sure to get an equally generous return package in the mail, ASAP, stuffed with Red Sox and Devils (my Packers stocks have been completely depleted, though).  Also, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for anything featuring former Bears OL Todd Burger.

September roster expansion - it ain't just for the Big Leagues!
